Lot No. 43

Anglo-Dutch School, 17th Century

[Saleroom Notice]
Anglo-Dutch School, 17th Century - Old Master Paintings I

Portrait of a gentleman, in a gorget and embroidered doublet,
oil on canvas, 67 x 55 cm, oval, framed

Saleroom Notice:

We are grateful to Dr. Duncan Thomson for suggesting the attribution to Daniel Mijtens (circa 1590-1648)  on the basis of a high resolution photograph. Dr. Thomson notes the strength of the very finely modulated treatment of the flesh areas of the nose and both cheeks, typical of Mijtens’s handling, along with the master’s characteristic lighting via the very carefully thrown shadows, from left to right, on the face and beard, and on the collar.

The present portrait of a dashing officer in a fashionable blackened-armour gorget and intricately embroidered doublet likely shows an English sitter by an Anglo-Dutch hand. A date of execution in the latter 1620s has been suggested. However, the identity of this highly accomplished hand and the exact identity of the sitter has so far eluded scholars. The frame is English but later than the portrait, and dates from the early eighteenth century.
