August Fischer

August Fischer - 19th Century Paintings and Watercolours

(Copenhagen 1854-1921)
Old Nuremberg, a View of the Synagogue from the Pegnitz River, signed Aug. Fischer, oil on canvas, 32.5 x 43 cm, framed, (Rei)

The Danish painter August Fischer is best known for his architectural motifs, for which he found inspiration especially during his numerous travels.
The present lot depicts a picturesque view of the banks of the Pegnitz River, with women washing clothes. The domes of the Nuremberg Synagogue are visible in the background.
The synagogue, which no longer exists today, was built by the architect Adolf Wolff on Hans-Sachs-Platz and inaugurated in 1874. Fischer created at least two versions of the present motif and the magnificent building soon became one of the well-known symbols of the cityscape, often reproduced on postcards, drawings and paintings. After the Nazi takeover, the synagogue was demolished in 1938 and never rebuilt.
