Literature:
possibly J. J. de Gelder, Bartholomeus van der Helst, Brussels/Rotterdam, 1921, no. 396

We are grateful to Fred Meijer for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. He compares it to a Portrait of Johan Meerman (1624–1675), dated 1667, in the Museum Meermanno-Westreenianum, The Hague. He further notes that the coat-of-arms in the upper left corner belongs to the Gael family.

The present lot is accompanied by a written certificate from 1952 by Walther Bernt. He attributes the painting to Bartolomeus van der Helst.
