Brussels, c. height 346 x width 391 cm, first half of the 17th century. Important, finely woven pictorial carpet with biblical depictions. In the centre of the picture, a bull is being sacrificed at a small altar, while a procession of people wearing laurel wreaths is approaching. The stoning of the martyr Stephen is depicted in a wooded landscape in the background. The divided border features allegorical figures and colourful flower decor, each with a vignette depicting an aristocratic couple in a castle park. The lower galloon features the city mark of Brussels with shield and "BB" (Brabant Brussels), and on the far right there is the mark of a master workshop. Both Jan and Hendrick Mattens, who were active at the same time, used this monogram. A similar tapestry, titled "Sacrifice of Noah", is preserved in the Royal Spanish Collection in Madrid. With a few losses, tears, and old repairs, in original condition. (VP)
