Ettore Tito studied with the Dutch artist Cecil Van Haanen (1844-1914) and then at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice under Pompo Marino Molmenti (1819-1894). He graduated at the age of 17. In 1894 he became Professor of Painting at the Accademia until 1927. From 1895 he exhibited regularly at the Venice Biennale. His work was widely exhibited, and he was awarded the gold medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. In 1929 he became a member of the Italian Royal Academy.
He befriended artists such as John Singer Sargent, Anders Zorn and Mario Fortuny who lived and worked in Venice. He painted the everyday life of the Venetian people, for instance children bathing or playing. The setting of the present lot is Pellestrina, an island in the southern Venetian Lagoon.
