Circle of Roelandt Savery
(Kortrijk 1576–1639 Utrecht)
God creating Creatures and Mankind,
oil on panel, 76.2 x 137.9 cm, framed
Provenance:
sale, Christie’s, Amsterdam, 14 November 2012, lot 107;
Private collection, Germany
The present panel with its meticulous rendering of verdant foliage and exotic fauna, carefully articulated by subtly contrasting lighting, presents a sparkling vision of earthly paradise, and is the work of an unidentified hand in the orbit of Roelandt Savery. The blues and greens of the background contrasts with darker tones denoting the form with a camel and leaping gazelle framing the composition on either side, while in the foreground the vigorous handling of God with his crimson cloak adds to the sense of divine drama. In keeping with biblical tradition, all the animals co-exist in perfect harmony.
A dendrochronological examination by Peter Klein, Hamburg, concludes a felling date for the oak tree from which the panel is constructed of circa 1615–21.
