Lot No. 45

Jan Brueghel II

Jan Brueghel II - Old Master Paintings I

(Antwerp 1601–1678)
The Inferno,
oil on copper, 21 x 26.3 cm, framed

Provenance:
sale, Galerie Bassenge, Berlin, 2 June 2022, lot 6009;
where acquired by the present owner

Klaus Ertz in his certificate of 14 September 2022: ‘The painting is in good condition. Surprisingly, there is no model by the father’s hand for this composition, which is full of devilish spooks ‘supervised’ by Lucifer (who appears in the right middle ground. […] Jan Brueghel the Younger has accomplished here an autonomous composition packed with eerie creatures and blazes of fire. However, as to the finish of the rocky landscape and the ghosts, the artist’s brushwork is still extremely detailed – an aspect in which he proves the keeper of his father’s legacy. It was he who continued his father’s painted inheritance on the highest level, until he would arrive at his own, independent style in the 1620s and began to break away from his father’s example. These infernal landscapes could be variably employed, be it for such mythological subjects as Orpheus and Eurydice and for such Christian themes as the Temptation of Saint Anthony’.
