Andries van Eertvelt was born in Antwerp, where he joined the Guild of Saint Luke in 1609 as a master. He is regarded as one of the first Flemish marine painters. His depictions of naval engagements are treated in a dramatic manner with sharply contrasting effects of light and dark. He was highly esteemed during his lifetime. In his day van Eertvelt was a man of distinction whose artistic qualities were praised by the poet Cornelis de Bie and whose marine paintings were appreciated abroad, some being exported as far as Seville and Lisbon. He had also an eager clientele in the Dutch Republic.
