School of Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn, late 17th Century

School of Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn, late 17th Century - Old Master Paintings I

A young man wearing a cap with feathers,
oil on panel, 68 x 54.5 cm, framed

The present picture depicting a youth in a feathered cap, turned three-quarters, is a tronie in keeping with the rich artistic traditions of the Dutch Golden Age. Perhaps most famously, Rembrandt van Rijn and his many pupils, would use and re-use such character studies in larger history compositions. The dress of the present sitter is not contemporary with the mid-seventeenth century but a rather historicist costume that is known as Burgundian, hailing from before the days of the Dutch Republic. This device was not only used by the Amsterdam School, but also employed by Haarlem School painters, such Frans Hals for vanitas treatments such as the Young Man with a Skull conserved in the National Gallery, London. However, the authorship of the present panel has long remained an open art historical question, with recent scholarship drawing parallels between it and the output of the Haarlem workshop of Salomon de Bray (1597–1664).
