Follower of Giovanni Antonio Canal, called il Canaletto
Palazzo Ducale from the Bacino di San Marco, Venice with the Bucintoro returning to the Molo on Ascension Day,
oil on canvas, 75.5 x 127 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private European collection
The present composition shows Ascension Day in Venice which celebrates the city’s ‘Marriage to the Sea’. The Doge sailed out beyond the Venetian Lagoon into open sea aboard his official vessel the Bucintoro and cast a ring into the sea to seal this symbolic union. Pictured here are the multitude of people gathered to welcome the ship back to the quay, offering a view of some of the city’s finest monuments: the Palazzo Ducale, the Libreria Marciana, the Campanile, and in the distance beyond, the Punta della Dogana and the church of Santa Maria della Salute.
This painting is based on a composition by Canaletto conserved in the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, Barcelona (inv. no. 77, on loan from the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza). There are also other studio versions of this subject, (see: W. G. Constable, Canaletto. Giovanni Antonio Canal 1697–1768, London 1976, vol. II, pp. 361–62, cat. no. 340).
