The present panel is a typically refined work from the hand of Joris van der Hagen. Although active mainly in the Hague, painting city and landscapes of the Dutch capital and its surrounding countryside, the artist made several sea voyages. The present view appears to be a capriccio in which van der Hagen has depicted the Tower of Homage, usually situated high up upon the Rock of Gibraltar, at shore level, receiving a gun salute from a passing ship.
