Ponte di Rialto, Venice; and
Campo S. S. Apostoli, Venice,
oil on canvas, each 52 x 75 cm, framed, a pair (2)
We are grateful to Dario Succi for suggesting the attribution.
The present pair of paintings can be dated to around 1785 and depict the Ponte di Rialto and the Campo Santi Apostoli in Venice. The two canvasses are characterised by delicate colouring and a pronounced interest for perspective, that is further emphasised by the boats and small figures animating the scenes in the foreground. The compostions are both based on different sources: The painting on which the Ponte di Rialto is based on a print by Luca Carlevarijs that was published as number 57 in a series of 103 views of Venice in Le Fabriche, e Vedute di Venetia in 1703. The second painting, showing the Campo Santi Apostoli with people strolling and conversing, relates to the engraving by Antonio Visentini from 1742’s Urbis Venetiarum Prospectus Celebriores.
Please note change of attribution.
