Maximilian Reinitz
(Wien 1872–1935)
Two ladies in a room, c. 1930, on the reverse signed not by the artist’s hand, oil on canvas, 80 x 55.5 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private Collection, Austria
Maximilian Reinitz, who was a member of the Hagenbund, turned to the New Objectivity style in the 1920s. His forms became clearer and simpler and, thanks to a lucid colour scheme, convey their own magic of silence and mystery.
This picture also contains a coded message: the half-nude woman standing in front of a dark curtain on the left puts her arms in a circle around her pregnant belly, the same woman sits on the right in a yellow dress in front of a window from which the view extends into a wide landscape. Dream, longing, expectation, hope, all are inherent in this picture.
