An Imposing Baroque Cabinet on Chest, - A Viennese Collection

German mid-18th century, attributed to Johann Georg Wahl (Osthofen near Worms), different mainly walnut veneered softwood frames, chest of drawers with curved and angled front on bun feet, fruitwood marquetry in panels and floral motifs, 4 drawers with ivory and bone figural intarsia, also inlaid with pewter, the sides and top with figural and avian marquetry, upper section with moulded cornice with prominent middle section, 1 drawer and rounded lesenes, 2 doors with panels (so-called ‘Bastionsfüllungen’) - the latter ebonised, containing elaborate partly chequered marquetry décor with ivory and pewter intarsia, engraved flower vases with canopies, bandings amongst others with depiction of Justitia, sumptuous interior with 21 drawers of different size and elaborate panel and band marquetry, pewter decor, elaborately marquetried niche door with 6-drawer extensible body, the interior fitted with 6 secret drawers flanked by lesenes carved with ornamental motifs - these in turn reveal a total of 12 secret drawers when slid away, c. 227 x 119 x 80 cm, some supplemented elements and later marquetry in the course of a previous restoration, veneered, in well-maintained condition with slight fissures in places, (DOC)
