Archduchess Maria Elisabeth of Austria was the daughter of Empress Maria Theresia and Emperor Francis I. She was considered a beauty and was proposed as a second wife to the older French King Louis XV, however, she contracted smallpox and although she recovered, the disease left disfiguring scars and her chances of a suitable marriage were diminished. She became abbess of the Noble Ladies’ Convent in Innsbruck, which her mother Maria Theresa had founded in 1765.
