A fireplace screen, designed by Norbert Krieger
Pilsen/Czech Republic c. 1932, archaic construction made of matte nickel plated brass, height c. 45 cm, width c. 65 cm, depth c. 4 cm. Slight signs of age and use, scratches and abrasions. (MHA)
This fireplace screen originally came from an interior by architect Norbert Krieger in Pilsen and was located in the drawing room in front of a marble-clad fireplace surround. All the furniture in this apartment was macassar veneered and mostly built-in. Norbert Krieger worked closely with Adolf Loos in Pilsen, who furnished several apartments for bankers' and business families in around 1928/29. He trained at the Vienna Building School founded by Loos in 1920-23. In Pilsen, Krieger also realised his own projects in the style of Loos in the 1930s.
