Two “Chiavari” chairs, Giovanni Battista Ravenna,
Italy c. 1850, four-legged cherrywood structure, partly turned, split willow wickerwork seats, dimensions of each chair: height c. 85 cm, width c. 42 cm, depth c. 44 cm, height of seat c. 42 cm. Signs of age and use, scratches and abrasions, isolated minor chipping, partly with slight residues / small staining, one chair with damaged wickerwork, one cross strut glued.
This extremely lightweight seating model is named after the place in Italy where it was produced. A century later, it inspired Gio Ponti to create his “Superleggera” chair. (MHA)
