Hieronymus Hess came from a petty bourgois family in Basel and had no artistic background. He attended the public drawing school and was also a pupil of Maximilian Neustück in Basel. Between 1819 and 1923 he worked and studied in Naples and Rome, where he was in contact with Joseph Anton Koch, Bertel Thorvaldsen and the circle of Nazarenes. 1825-1826 Hess followed an engagement in Nuremberg, where he met Ludwig Richter. Then the artist settled permanently in Basel, where he taught drawing from 1831 to 1835. Hess became known above all for his time-critical caricatures and the designs for Zizenhausen terracottas..
