The present drawing may have been made after a print; at least the pronounced graphic structures in the garments suggest a direct connection. The large format of the drawing also suggests that it was conceived as an autonomous sheet, possibly demanded from the academy or another teaching institution. Drawings of this kind were often shown at the Academy's annual exhibitions, which is also indicated by the high degree of the sheet’s execution. The printed model from which the artist worked was probably created somewhat earlier, towards the late 17th or early 18th century, and may have derived from a French artist.
