Lot No. 182

Hans Makart

(Salzburg 1840-1884 Vienna)
Study of a reclining man in armour, pencil on laid paper, 19,8 x 31 cm, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

Provenance:
Estate stamp "Makarts Nachlass", Lugt 1779;
Private collection, Austria.

The present drawing is a detail study of the large-format painting "Pappenheim's Death" (oil on canvas, 107 x 147 cm) in the Salzburg Museum (Inv. No. 1020-2012), which was painted around 1861-1862. The armour is finely rendered and true to detail, everything else is only indicated. Makart often made studies in front of originals and in museums in preparation for paintings with historical content. The present drawing was probably also made after an original suit of armour preserved in a museum. A comparable pencil study related to the painting is in the Salzburg Museum, dated 1859 (Inv. No. 1530/49) and in Vienna, Graphic collection Albertina, dated 1860 (Inv. No. 29623). For the painting see: Gerbert Frodl, Hans Makart - Werkverzeichnis der Gemälde, Vienna 2013, cat. 33, p. 59 (ill.).

We are grateful to Dr. Gerbert Frodl for the confirmation of the attribution after an expertise of the original and for his scientific support.
