The present drawing was executed in the early years of the 20th century when Repin was occupied in the 1870es with the illustration of Gogol’s masterpiece in the collection "Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka”. The present scene shows a young woman who became unfaithful to her husband and was surprised by the devil in the episode “Cherevik and the devil“ in the story „The Fair at Sorochyntsi“
