Vasili Ivanovich Pavlov
(born in Yassov near Yaroslavl on the River Volga in 1861 or 1863-?)
A Homage to the Monastery on the River Volga, signed in Cyrillic script, oil on canvas, 92.5 x 166 cm, damaged, framed
Provenance:
Private Collection, Czech Republic.
In 1882-1885, Pavlov was a visiting student at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. The present lot probably represents the Trinity Makaryev Monastery in Kalyazin or the Convent of the Intercession (Pokrovsky Monastery) on the Volga. Both were founded in the 15th century and flooded in 1940 during the construction of the Uglich Reservoir.
