Die Originalversion dieser Skulptur schuf Praxiteles im 4. Jh. vor Christus in Bronze, Eros war der Sohn der Göttin Aphrodite. Eine Marmorversion gibt es im Vatikan (Galleria delle Statue), gefunden in Centocelle in der Umgebung von Rom im späten 18. Jh. von Gavin Hamilton (1723–1798) – er war ein schottischer Historien- und Porträtmaler, sowie Archäologe und Kunsthändler.
