Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder
![Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder - Old Master Paintings Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder - Old Master Paintings](/fileadmin/lot-images/38A161219/normal/johann-heinrich-tischbein-d-ae-895577.jpg)
(Haina 1722–1789 Kassel)Portrait of Prince Charles of Hesse-Kassel (1744–1836),
oil on canvas, 69 x 56 cm, carved frame featuring the crowned Hessian lion
Provenance:
German private collection
We are grateful to Helmut Börsch Supan, who endorsed present painting as an autograph work by Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder (private correspondence, August 2016).
In the painting the prince wears the star of the Danish Order of the Elephant on a light-blue sash, the star of the House Order of the Golden Lion, founded by Landgrave Frederick II in 1770, and, on a blue collar, the cross of the Military Merit Order established in 1769. This clearly suggests that the present painting was executed after 1770. In 1766, Charles of Hesse-Kassel married Princess Luise of Denmark (1750–1831), with whom he had six children. He resided in Schleswig as Royal Danish Governor of the Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein. In 1778 Anton Wilhelm Tischbein, the youngest brother of Johann Heinrich Tischbein, painted a portrait of Prince Charles in the same uniform and in an identical posture (today preserved at Ruine Wilhelmsbad at Hanau).
