The old fortress was built by the Venetians in the 16th century. To secure the fortress, a canal was dug between the protective walls and the adjacent mainland. Originally where was a drawbridge; today a stone bridge spans the canal. The fortress formerly housed the entire city until it finally expanded to the west. The old fortress is the city's most characteristic monument and a masterpiece of fortification architecture.
