Lot No. 580

Leopold Zinnögger

(Linz 1811–1872)
A Magnificent Floral Still Life with Roses, Tulips, Lilac-Coloured Hyacinths, Narcissus, Iris and Carnations, signed, dated Leopold Zinögger (1)838, oil on canvas on board, 75 x 61 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private Collection, Germany.

Leopold Zinnögger was born the son of a Linz gardener and showed artistic talent at an early age. From 1830 he studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts with fellow Linz painter Johann Baptist Reiter and specialised in botanical painting. After his training he returned to his hometown of Linz, where he taught academic drawing at the Imperial and Royal State High School. He had been exposed to botany since childhood and kept an important nursery in his house in Linz, which encouraged his interest in the exact study of nature. In addition to numerous watercolour sketches of flowers and fruit, he occasionally painted large and small easel works distinguished by their chromatic effects. This is also the case in the present lot, which shows a rich bouquet of flowers with roses, tulips, lilac hyacinths, daffodils, irises, and carnations.
