Lot No. 61

Massimo Stanzione

(Orta di Atella 1585–1656)
The Death of Ananias and Sapphira,
oil on canvas, 49 x 76 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private European collection

We are grateful to Nicola Spinosa for endorsing the attribution of the present painting.

The present work is a study for a now destroyed fresco, originally on the vault of San Paolo Maggiore in Naples, painted by Massimo Stanzione between 1642 and 1644, with scenes from the lives of the Apostles Peter and Paul. Although most of the frescoes were severely damaged or even destroyed during the Second World War, the original appearance is documented through photographs (see S. Schütze, T. C. Willette, Massimo Stanzione. L’opera completa, Naples 1992, pp. 225–227, cat. no. A73, illustrated p. 353).

The 1648 and 1649 inventories of Don Giuseppe Carafa’s collection testify to the existence of a series of seventeen "modelli" related to the ceiling decoration of San Paolo Maggiore (see S. Schütze, ibid., 1992).
