Lot No. 68

Giovanni Battista Discepoli, called lo Zoppo da Lugano

(Castagnola 1590–1660 Milan)
The Annunciation,
oil on canvas, 103.5 x 142.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private European collection

We are grateful to Filippo Maria Ferro for suggesting the attribution of the present painting.

The present painting work by lo Zoppo da Lugano can be dated to around 1625–1650, when the artist was influenced by the pictorial innovations of the Nuvolone family, in particular Panfilo (1578/81–1651) and Carlo Francesco (1608/09–1661), as is reflected in the softness of the flesh tones and the rendering of the garments. Two other paintings depicting the Annunciation, one for Sant’Antonio in Lugano, dated 1624 and another one in a private collection, dated to the early 1650s can be compared to the present painting (see F. Frangi, A. Bernardini, Giovan Battista Discepoli detto lo Zoppo da Lugano. Un protagonista della pittura barocca in Lombardia, Geneva 2001, pp. 74–75, 124–125, no. 1, 23).
