Giovanni Battista Lanfranchi was the son of the still life painter Carlo Lanfranchi (1642–1706) (for Carlo Lanfranchi see: A. Cottino, La Seduzione della Natura: natura morta in Piemonte nel ‘600 e nel ‘700, Turin 2000, pp. 103–104, fig. 14; A. Cifani, F. Monetti, Carlo Lanfranchi, in: L. Trezzani, La Pittura di paesaggio in Italia. Il Seicento, Milano 2004, pp. 292–294).
Little is known of Giovanni Battista Lanfranchi’s biography at present, but it is documented that he inherited the position of conservator of the Royal Palace of Valentino from his father (see A. Cifani, F. Monetti, La collezione di dipinti di Pietro Mellarède (1659–1730) e degli eredi nel castello di Betton Bettonnet in Savoia, in: Saggi e Memorie di storia dell’arte, 33, 2009, p. 180).
