Lot No. 117

Giovanni Paolo Cervetto

(Genoa 1630–1657)
Juno receives Argus’ head,
oil on canvas, 99.5 x 125 cm, framed

We are grateful to Camillo Manzitti for suggesting the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a photograph.

The present painting depicts an episode of the myth of Juno and Argos from Ovid’s Metamorphoses (I, 583–750). The composition is inspired by a Rubens’ invention depicting the same subject, today in Cologne (Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, Corboud Foundation, inv. no. WRM 1040), but still visible in Genoa in the 17th century in the collection of Gio. Batta Balbi (see P. Boccardo, L’età di Rubens. Dimore, committenti e collezionisti genovesi, Genève-Milan 2004, pp. 418–419). A preparatory sketch by Giovanni Palo Cervetto for the present painting is in a private collection (see C. Manzitti, Aggiunte al catalogo di Valerio Castello e contributi sui suoi seguaci, in Valerio Castello: percorsi di approfondimento, atti del convegno, Genoa 5–6 June 2008).
