(Carlsbad 1870–1948 Vienna)
Album with 38 etchings, each signed, partly titled, dated and with a dedication, including a few poster designs (lithographs) and other paper ephemera, the sheets each attached to album pages, the inside of the book cover with a specially designed paper, the latter with the name stamp of Dr. Hans Ankwicz von Kleehoven and 3 labels with his collection signet, inscribed ‘Album III. Provenance:
Formerly Collection of Dr. Hans Ankwicz von Kleehoven, Vienna
Hans Ankwicz-Kleehoven was an Austrian art historian, art critic and librarian. As an art historian, he wrote numerous articles for the Thieme-Becker biographical dictionary and was in contact with many Austrian artists, including Richard Teschner. These contacts not only resulted in one of the most important collections of Austrian ex-libris art, but also provided the groundwork for an independent Austrian encyclopaedia of artists. His collection was presented in 1953 in the exhibition “Das Glück des Sammelns” [The Happiness of Collecting] at the Österreichische Staatsdruckerei. In addition to his research on humanism in Austria, he is regarded as one of the most significant critics and art mediators of the interwar period. Today, his biographical groundwork forms the basis for the artist documentation of the Belvedere Gallery.
The present album is a unique collection with regard to its scope and content. It contains prints from various creative periods of the artist, thus offering a detailed insight into his graphic oeuvre.
