(Nolde, Schleswig 1867–1956 Seebüll)
“Schiffe im Hafen Flensburg”, 1907, drypoint etching on thick wove paper, signed and dated Emil Nolde 1907, plate size 15 x 19.6 cm, sheet size 22 x 33.1 cm, Schiefler/Mosel 74 I (of III), slightly browned and with minor flecks, verso glue residues of a former mount, slightly visible on the front, framed, (RAC)
The drypoint etching is a replica of the image listed in Schiefler/Mosel under no. 61. During the printing of Seemann’s edition the plate was so badly worn that Nolde had to replicate the image on a new plate. The present example shows the first state before the revisions for the edition. Both the reflections in the water and the cloud of smoke are merely sketched with delicate drypoint strokes. The edition was then published with a typeset inscription in the lower margin in the ‘Zeitschrift für bildende Kunst’, 43 (1907), Neue Folge XIX, issue 2.
