Marcus Pernhart - vendere e comprare opere

28 July 1824 Untermieger (Austria) - 30 March 1871, St. Ruprecht, near Klagenfurt (Austria)

Markus Pernhart was an Austrian painter who rose to prominence for his depictions of Carinthia.

Born 1824 as the son of a carpenter in what is today Untermieger, he was instructed in painting by Eduard Ritter von Moro and Franz Steinfeld. He also expanded his artistic horizon while studying at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. Throughout his life he remained dedicated to the genre of landscape painting in all its manifold variations. Braving wind and weather, he spent endless hours hunkered outdoors to produce his realist paintings. Pernhart felt a particular love for his homeland, which was expressed in his artistic oeuvre. He celebrated his first professional success with the completion of an album comprising 198 depictions of Carinthian landmarks. Even Empress Elisabeth was enchanted by his paintings, acquiring 31 drawings of notable sights in Carinthia and a painting of Großglockner mountain for her personal collection.
A passionate alpinist, he climbed Austria’s highest mountain numerous times and was therefore able to reproduce topographically accurate perspectives in his works.
From the mid-19th century, he advanced to become an extremely popular artist whose works were highly respected by his contemporaries.
Pernhart died 1871 at the age of 46 in St. Ruprecht, near Klagenfurt, where he was also laid to rest.

Works by Markus Pernhart have featured successfully at Dorotheum auctions for years.
