The Carinthian painter Markus Pernhart was a passionate and intrepid artist, and was utterly dedicated to his work. He worked hard to create authentic representations of nature, not shying away from climbing the Carinthian Alps or enduring the cold on the shores of Lake Wörthersee for the sake of his art.
The Biographical Encyclopaedia of the Empire of Austria notes that he sat for hours painting snow and ice while warming his frozen hands and paint on a pan filled with hot coals.
