“The present painting, which I was able to examine in the original, depicts the ‘Cathedral square in Cattaro’ (today’s Kotor). As the signature suggests, it is an autograph work by Rudolf von Alt (1812–1905). In the autumn of 1840 he embarked on a journey to Dalmatia with his father, Jakob Alt, in order to continue his painterly documentation of Austrian domains. (...) They reached Kotor on 12 October, and left on 29 of the same month. Here he executed numerous watercolour sketches, which he would later develop in 1841/42, after his return, for the ‘peep box’ series of Emperor Ferdinand (...). In very rare cases did Alt also execute an oil version of the most beautiful watercolours; one of these masterpieces, a testimony to the artist’s superb skills also in this medium, is precisely the present painting.”
