Rudolf von Alt

Rudolf von Alt - Disegni e stampe fino al 1900, acquarelli e miniature

(Vienna 1812–1905) The Colosseum in Rome, study, an old inscription “Nr. 14, Rud. Alt, Rome Colisaeum, den 29ten May 1835, Naturstudie, 29. Mai 1835” on the reverse, watercolour on paper, laid down on green natural paper, 34 x 26,7 cm, mounted, framed, leicht browned, (Hu)

Provenance:
Private property Austria. During their second journey to Italy in 1835 Jacob and Rudolf Alt found numerous motifs for the series of Guckkasten pictures commissioned by Emperor Ferdinand I. From April on both artists were in Rome: “ ... The yield was enormous and diverse. – also in regard of the further development of the watercolour technique. The early watercolour study of their early period was followed by a more painterly formulated „study of nature“ of which the date of execution was often indicated on the reverse of the sheet.” (Maria Luise Sternath, Rudolf von Alt, exh. cat. Albertina, Vienna 2005, p. 122).

Compare:
Works of the second Italian journey 1835, especially Rome and Tivoli, Koschatzky 35/23–39 and ill. “Die Grotten des Aniene bei Tivoli”, 1835, in: Maria Luise Sternath, Rudolf von Alt, exhibition cat. Albertina, Vienna 2005, p. 124.
