Lotto No. 11

Eugen von Blaas

Eugen von Blaas - Dipinti dell’Ottocento

(Albano 1843–1931 Venice)
Secrets, oil on canvas, 40 x 54 cm, framed, (GG)

Provenance:
Private Collection Italy.

A certificate of authenticity issued by Dr. Antonella Bellin is available.

Inside a Venetian house, two young female commoners exchange comments in confidence about the handsome young man sitting at the end of the bench. The young, blond woman in traditional costume has interrupted her sewing to whisper in her friend’s ear, who got dressed up for a rendezvous with her sweetheart. With her fan, she tries to hide her blushing face as she delightedly listens to the comments of her confidante. The young man plays with his hat and is clearly very amused by the young women’s conversation.
Venetian folk life, and especially young Venetian women going about their daily work, characterise Blaas’s works at the beginning of the 1880s. The present picture can be classified as one of the most important paintings from this period. Blaas captured the initial ideas for this composition in an oil sketch on paper, which he then worked on canvas in a small-format bozzetto at a reduced size. The latter eventually served as a template for the final work.
