Eugene de Blaas, also known as Eugen von Blaas or Eugenio Blaas, comes from a well-known Austrian painters' family and is its most famous member. Von Blaas spent most of his life in Italy. He was mainly active as a genre painter and enjoyed international renown.
The artistic career of this Austrian raised in Italy was heavily influenced by his father, Carl von Blaas, who was active as a history painter, portraitist and fresco painter. Together with his brother Julius von Blaas, the young artist spent his apprenticeship years with his father. He studied at the academies of Venice and Rome. Study trips led him to France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. As did Carl von Blaas, Eugen von Blaas later also became a professor at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia and lived in Venice. He joined the Vienna Künstlerhaus in 1867.
Von Blaas is regarded as a pioneer of Venetian genre painting. Inspired by the hustle and bustle of the streets of Venice, he found his distinctive style early on. Many of his vividly colourful pictures depict scenes from the everyday life of late 19th-century Venetians. The focus of his many portraits is often on young women and girls.
Von Blaas exhibited his paintings at the Royal Academy in London from 1875–1891. The London Fine Art Society and the Arthur Tooth and Sons Gallery own numerous works by the artist to this day. Von Blaas also participated in many international exhibitions in cities that included Berlin, Munich, Vienna, Hamburg and Paris.
