Born in Albano as the son of the painter Carl von Blaas (1815-1894), he was encouraged to pursue his artistic talents from a young age. He studied in Venice, where he learned to copy models and casts of classical sculptures. He occasionally returned to Austria to help his father paint frescoes for the Arsenal in Vienna, but eventually settled in Venice.
Eugen von Blaas was celebrated mostly for being a painter of Venetian beauties dressed in traditional costumes. He constructed a world that seems to be frozen in time. His Venetian women have a seductive or melancholy appearance, such as the woman depicted in the present lot. She is dressed beautifully, wearing colourful fabrics.
