Filippo Lauri
(Rome 1623–1694)
Study of a Satyr, black chalk, on brown prepared laid paper, 21 x 18,9 cm, trimmed at lower margin, numbered “30” in pen and brown ink, mounted, unframed, (Sch)
Provenance:
Collection Giancarlo Sestieri, Rome.
The present study shows a figure which is a sketch for the stayr in the centre of the painting „Triumph of Bacchus”, which may have been executed for abbot Francesco Marucelli in 1680. The composition is in line with the description of a painting in the „Vita” of the artist published by Francesco Saverio Baldinucci: “A bacchanal with stayrs and satyresses dancing around the statue of Bacchus with putti who decorate the statue with flowers and fruits and with a small village.“ (F. S. Baldinucci, Vite di artisti dei secoli XVII - XVIII, herausgegeben von A. Matteoli,1975, p. 175.) The painting by Lauri was offered for sale at the Dorotheum auction „Old Masters” on October 12, 2011 (lot 438). A gouache (19 x 25 cm) which shows a somewhat shortened composition on the right side was exhibited in the Trafalgar Galleries at the Royal Academy II (Cat. No 39) in 1983.
