Looking to improve comfort and safety, Mercedes pulled all the stops in presenting the S-Class in 1971 – internal designation W 116. The company was duly rewarded when the first luxury class vehicle was named “Car of the Year”. This prestige model was built almost without optical changes until 1979, although its engineering was kept consistently ‘cutting edge’. Most recently it was available with ABS and airbag.

And the original owner certainly did not scrimp when ordering his S-Class. Although the 280 SE in was requested in pine green with Parchment fabric, automatic transmission and electric sunroof – more or less the classic 280 SE – the air conditioning, tinted windows and central locking system most certainly jacked up the purchase price quite considerably. So it is all the more astonishing that the Benz was registered by its third owner before it was even six months old. But this one certainly appreciated the star cruiser, driving it until 1988 before selling it to the consignor. He then deregistered the 280 SE five years later and placed it in his garage. From then on the Mercedes will have enjoyed a more peaceful life as a vintage car. Driven regularly but only for short distances, it received a fresh coat of paint and is yet to clock up 150,000 kilometres. Still beautifully pristine, its quiet reserve and accessories certainly catch the eye. Recently serviced, it opens the door to occasional trips into a bygone age. The S-Class is, after all, in a class of its own.
