The Mass of Saint Gregory,
tempera on panel, 36 x 27.5 cm, unframed
The present lot is a significant example of late fourteenth century, Southern Umbrian painting, in which elements derived from Giotto are mixed with the late Gothic style. It was probably produced in the area of the Duchy of Spoleto, and can be compared to works by the ‘Maestro della Dormitio di Terni’.
The present subject is one of the earliest representations, in Italian painting, of the Mass of Saint Gregory the Great. It portrays Pope Gregory celebrating mass in Rome, in the church of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, during the moment when the vision of Christ as Man of Sorrows appears on the altar. The subject became widely popular during the fifteenth century in Spain and in Northern Europe.
