Lotto No. 154

Bernardino Licinio

Bernardino Licinio - Dipinti antichi II

(Venice circa 1490 – after 1549)
Madonna and Child with Saint Peter and Saint Francis,
oil on panel, 47 x 77.5 cm, framed

We are grateful to Mauro Lucco for suggesting the attribution after examining the present painting in the original. He dates it to circa 1535 and compares it to Licinio’s Franciscan Martyrs in the church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, Venice.

Technical Analysis by Gianluca Poldi:

IR reflectography shows a detailed outline underdrawing beneath the Child and his Mother, but a less visible one can be noted behind, with the figures arranged in different positions. There are significant changes to the composition, that was drawn and painted, then modified and repainted by the same hand: the Child was standing and facing the saint on the right, who was not originally conceived as Saint Francis but a figure with a veil or a hood; the saint on the left was not Peter, but a saint wearing a habit with his right hand brought to his chest, probably the same Saint Francis later placed on the right. All the figures of the first draft were smaller in size and behind a balustrade, they were then enlarged.
