The subject of the present drawing is comparable to two portrait studies in the Kupferstichkabinett of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (Inv. HZ_12.162 and HZ_12.200); the two sheets may even show the same model. The kind of execution and the stroke of the chalk can be also found in secured Schmutzer drawings. In addition, the modelling with cross-hatching, the emphasized employment of the chalk in the hair and the concordance of the lock of hair falling over the shoulder onto the chest are comparable with known studies by the artist. The lack of a signature and the fact that such sheets were often copied by his pupils could indicate that the present drawing may only be a copy by a pupil or an artist from Schmutzer's circle.
