…The artistic focal point of precisely the interwar period lay in Innsbruck, in Schwaz alone a second, non-organised artist group formed that was able to express itself, above all, through its connection with the artistic scene in Munich (Hans Weber-Tyrol). The Innsbruck artists were on friendly terms both with Rudolf Lehnert, Ernst Nepo, Alphons Schnegg and Sidonius Schrom in the Mühlau circle, and also aligned themselves with competing interest groups, such as the Innsbruck Secession, the Tyrol Chamber of Artists, the “Waage” (with Prachenksy, Humer, Torggler), the “Heimat” association of artists (with Schrom) and the “Neuer Bund” (with Hell and Weber-Tyrol), and constituted important and influential factors for Tyrol’s cultural life. Meetings with artists not integrated into one of these circles were a rare occurrence.
Alfons Walde therefore saw himself compelled to forge his own path upon his own, harmoniously developed foundations, and, with his artistic work, was able to set an important example for the character of Tyrolean art as a whole. Walde was not an innovator of an artistic language breaking with tradition, rather, he perfected a form of expression that was transformed through his own mentality from the diverging positions of the Austrian Secessionist, German Expressionist and New Objectivity movements.
