Lot No. 61 -

Attributed to Antoine Caron

Attributed to Antoine Caron - Collection Reinhold Hofstätter

(Beauvais c. 1515–1599 Paris) The Dialogue of the Prince with Death, allegory of the horrors of war,
oil on canvas, 74 x 54 cm, framed

Provenance:
Formerly Belgian Private Collection, according to a label on the reverse; Sale Hampel, Munich, 19 June 2012, lot 211
Antoine Caron, to whose style this painting bears a very close resemblance, was court painter to King Henri II of France and Marie de’ Medici. He worked alongside Primaticcio and Nicolò dell’Abbate at the Palace of Fontainebleau between 1540 and 1550. In addition to paintings and sketches, he also designed patterns for glass windows and tapestries. The small number of his works that have been preserved focus on historical and allegorical subjects, depicting ceremonial scenes and imagery associated with magic, alchemy and astrology. One characteristic element of Caron’s style is the composition of the image akin to that of a theatrical tableau, with groups of figures positioned against a sweeping background. The mannerisms evoked by the elongated limbs of his figures are typical of Caron’s style, as are the vivid colours.
