... The painting shows a shepherd in an alpine pasture landscape. His left hand leans on a stick, and in his raised right hand he holds a bunch of alpine roses. The opened grey jacket allows the white shirt to be visible; on his hips rests the blue apron which corresponds to the blue of his socks. The ground of the pasture with a stone-built alpine hut, and ascending hills with grazing cows, extend behind him. On the horizon looms a snowy chain of mountain peaks.
The shadows in the rocky and snowy areas are represented in a variety of blue tones, while the areas of snow that lie in the sun are modelled in nuanced shades of white. The passages of snow and the areas of pasture become a means of atmosphere in their melodic nuancing of colour. The blue sky and the visibly radiant sun emphasise the idyll of the summer day. ...
