The sitter was the wife of the Prussian major general Gustav Albrecht von Schlabrendorf (1703–1765). Anna Dorothea Therbusch came from the well-known Lisiewski family of artists. At the age of forty she was called to the Stuttgart court and in 1764 switched over to the Palatine court in Mannheim. She then travelled to Paris, where she was admitted to the Académie for her painting Young Man with a Glass. In 1769 the painter returned to Berlin, where she made a name for herself as a portraitist of members of the court and the aristocracy.
