The Virgin, Saint Peter, Saint Paul appearing to Saint Thomas Aquinas,
oil on canvas, 116 x 147.2 cm, framed
Saleroom notice:
We are grateful to Vilmos Tátrai for suggesting an attribution to Alessandro Turchi, called l’Orbetto (Verona 1578–1649 Rome).
The artist of the present work, who has yet to be identified, was probably active in Rome in the first half of the 17th century. The Virgin shows similarities to the production of Carlo Saraceni. The light, the setting of the scene and the chromatic palette appear to be closely related to the production of French Caravaggesque painters from around 1620–1630.
Domenico Andrea Bottieri, in his book Le otto beatitudini spiegate secondo la dottrina dell’angelico dottor della Chiesa Tommaso d’Aquino, of 1762 describes the unusual iconography of a particular moment from the life of Saint Thomas Aquinas, when Saint Peter and Paul appeared to him to explain the meaning of misunderstood passages from the Scriptures.
