Via her mother’s family line, Landgravine Philippine was a niece of King Frederick II of Prussia. In 1772 she was married to Landgrave Frederick II of Hesse-Kassel, who was 25 years her senior. Their marriage remained childless. In Kassel she led an independent and cultivated life and even established her own court. Her secret partner in life and the father of her illegitimate son was her Lord Chamberlain, Count George Levin of Wintzingerode, a future Württemberg statesman. In 1794 the Landgravine took him as her morganatic husband. From 1792 on, she lived a luxurious life in her own palace in Berlin. When Landgravine Philippine died in 1800, Count Wintzingerode was her only heir. Large parts of her estate were kept at Bodenstein Castle in the region of Eichsfeld until 1945.
